Background
How would you describe the childhood of the character? Rough. As long as he had known, he had survived on the streets of Illumos. Orphaned at an early age, he barely remembers his parents or anything about what happened to cause them to leave. He remembers having a home once. And he remembered how warm his mother's embrace was. He remembers the excitement his sister would show when their father came home. But what his father did, he is not sure. How his mother looked is fuzzy at best. And what forced them to leave is something that is far beyond him.
Initially, it was his sister who had provided for them both. Nothing but a child herself, she took on illegal work as a maid to a brothel matron to afford food and supplies for shelter for them both. But the atmosphere was rough. And she endured quite a bit of abuse. Both physically and mentally. Living at the lowest level in one of the world's greatest cities showed how little most cared for those beneath society's views.
Eventually, when he was about ten and 13, his sister fell sick. Very, very ill. Although unable to afford a doctor, he did his best to stay by her side and care for her. Now, it was his turn to take on the role of caretaker.
She had survived in what was nothing short of a miracle, but not without severe side effects. For now, Yuruso's sister was left permanently blinded, unable to work or care for herself. Although Yuruso had managed to find work himself at this point, his naturally outspoken personality made it difficult to keep anything long-term. And so he survived the best way he knew how. Learning to defend himself with nothing more than luck and perseverance, he began to take up pickpocketing. First, with those who don't have a base level, fellow dregs who were far more capable of caring for themselves than he was. But it was through relations and collected information he began to find ways out of the bottom-most layers of Celestial City. He traveled through vents, maintenance passages, and sewers to get to higher and higher levels and steal from those who benefited more than him.
And he began to get good at it. His stealth, resilience, and sharp wit with a knife made it so that his name lingered on the lips of fellow outcasts until it met the ears of the leader of The Shadowblades, a lowest-level organization of murderers, thieves, and swindlers.
At 13, he had been approached and brought before their leader, Rolando Wentz, one of the most wanted men in the Kingdom of Celes. Given the opportunity to join them. Something no one should ever take lightly. And it was with little hesitation that Yuruso took the chance, knowing how easier it would be for him to provide for himself and his sister this way. And so, when he was handed a knife to partake in the right of passage ceremony, he embraced the opportunity. To join the Shadowblades, one must scar a part of their body with the heated blade of a knife, forever engraving their loyalty to the organization. And Yuruso, as enthusiastic to find a means of survival as he was, looked Rolando in the eyes as he boldly dragged the signature "y" shaped mark directly into his right cheek.
This garnered amusement from Rolando, who, in turn, took the boy into his direct tutelage as he moved his way forward amongst the Shadowblades. In turn, it gave him enough funds to form meager, permanent housing within the lower levels without relying on anyone else.
.
How would you describe the teenage years of the character? As the years passed, Yuruso had worked his way up to a position of notoriety among The Shadowblades. He took every odd job he could handle, surpassing each without a hitch. By the time he hit 16, he was able to bring his jurisdiction of a small group of thieves and pickpockets. A child prodigy of the worst caliber. He fancied himself a master of The City of Celest's underbelly, finding undetected ways to sneak and maneuver across various parts of the city. He was known to be able to get in and out of any place with a hitch. Hed managed to find his way about the levels of the highest noble classes without notice. His most authentic skill is his fast way of thinking out of trouble, resilience, and tenacity to escape by any means necessary. And as he grew bolder and his hits more daring, Rolando placed more faith in him.
Until the most genuine test Yuruso could muster arrived, for one night, the Royal Celestial Family was to hold their crowned jewels on display for all of the highest and most prestigious families to see.
And Yuruso's job was to take them before the show's opening ceremony.
Sneaking into the royal gala wasn't an issue. He had done it plenty of times before. And even taking the jewels themselves seemed to work out fine for him and his crew. It was escaping that was the real issue. For it seemed, after all of the years he had worked with his crew, there had been a sell-out among them. And at the primary source of their escape was a group of guards, ready to snag them.
Bit by bit, each of his men had been taken down and brought into custody, but Yuruso was tenacious and as resilient as ever to escape. With only a satchel full of essential jewels, one of them being the royal crown with the Crystal of Light embedded, Yuruso weaved his knowledge and stealthy nature to find a way out.
But even after escaping, he had a hard time. The royal military had now been on high alert, and he found himself shooting from a relative unknown to one of the most wanted men in the kingdom. Hiding the Crystal of Light in a small forgotten workers' storeroom between level passageways, one he was sure only he knew of, he made a run back for the lowest level to go and get his sister in hopes of hiding away from enforcement.
But he had become so compromised, making it difficult not to get noticed. Worse, knowing he was compromised, The Shadowblades sold him out to protect them from repercussions. And as he got home to grab his sister and escape, he found himself surrounded.
He and his sister were captured by the First Guard of The Royal Family, Sir Argon, and put on trial. Little did he know that his family had a history with the direct royal line. Tortured and beaten, he and his sister were placed under constant pressure to reveal the whereabouts of the jewels. And yet neither succumbed.
This placed the royal family at an impasse. They could not execute the two due to the superstition behind their lineage. But they could not execute them either. And so it was with long hesitation that they instead banished the two to the desolate crystal mine shafts to work under closely supervised slave labor for the rest of their lives.
How would you describe the adulthood of the character?
It took Yuruso a full year to have the mental capacity to think of a way out. At this point, his sister was so sick that she was given only the most menial of tasks to survive. But little by little, he strived to find a way.
It was during a revolt by someone else entirely. Someone he didn't even know. Perhaps he got lucky? But in the chaos and violence, he escaped the caverns, carrying Erave by a hair. But that was not the end of their journey, for although they managed to escape mines, surviving along the barren fields along Celestial Cities' borders was just as tedious. For as radiant and beautiful as the city was, everything outside of the walls had been stripped of its fertility, leaving nothing but yellowed grassy fields barely getting by for as far as the eyes could see.
Yuruso, the city kid he was, had to learn how to use his previously acquired skills for thieving and brawling to hunt now and scavenge where he could.
After many miles, he and Erave found the shorelines leading to the oceans, the first time Yuruso had seen such a thing. It was a pity that there was very little to keep them protected without the grasses to hide in.
Hearing noise in the distance, Yuruso found an illegal trading ship parked on the shore and, full of himself, thought he might be able to scavenge some supplies off of the mangey crew.
Yuruso did not scavenge supplies but was captured. He was leaving himself and his sister at the hands of a sizeable pirating crew. Used as a shiphand, the pirates used Erave against him, saying they would keep her cared for so long as he cleaned and obeyed every order without question. Throughout time, he had gotten to know the pirate's reason for being there: a hostage situation amid negotiation, a princess to a foreign land held hostage. And somehow, keeping himself obedient for his sister's sake, he managed to get wrapped into the trip across the ocean to the kingdom of Nigeria, home of the winged ones. Forced to keep guard during the transaction, he had to spend a few weeks away from the main ship, befriending some of the inner crew and the pirate's young leader, Essei.
But just when things were looking up, and all seemed to be going well, chaos hit—for upon arrival to the main fleet, Essei, Yuruso, and the few members who took place during negotiations returned to the main ship only to find death and destruction. Many of the men slaughtered the boat in the midst of going aflame.
Panicked, Yuruso rushed to find his sister, hoping to save her again, only to see a monster in her place. Consumed by rage from the constant plights they faced, Erave somehow turned into a strange bestial creature, slaughtering all who crossed her path.
A panicked Yuruso stood shocked as she jumped into the ocean with promises of revenge against all those who harmed them, leaving a flabbergasted and shocked Yuruso alone and figuring out what to do next.
With most of his crew gone, Essei made the critical call to try to regroup at the shorelines of Nijetia. Only for them to be ambushed by the patrolling guards of the kingdom, still on high alert.
Captured and imprisoned with the rest of the crew, Yuruso was now stuck in a foreign country with no family, beaten, and hopeless. Thankfully, there was a trump card at hand. In her time of capture, Princess Diamond slowly learned Essei. And in her youthful curiosity, she had become enchanted by him. She had gotten to know Essei and his secret birthright with continued visits to the prison. The overturned next in line to the kingdom of the northern seas, Essei revealed his position while on display to the court. But they were in luck! The winged people of Nijetia were enemies of the Northern People. Knowing they now had the usurped crowned prince from two decades past, they knew they had a trump card over those who constantly tried to take over their land.
Unknowingly, Yuruso ended up dragged into a grand political conflict.
Diamond, stepping up to Essei's defense in light of the realization, used it to convince her father to protect Essei in hopes that they may overturn the northern lands' government with the revelation of a living prince.
And what better way to start than to sneak the best of the country's spies with what few remaining Northern pirates still existed from the crew?
